ANDY AWFORD has revealed the stats are backing Pompey’s hard-running charge to survival.

And the Blues boss has presented the figures to his players to underline the graft they are putting in, as his side battle to stay in League Two.

Awford has impressed a high-tempo game plan upon his team since assuming the position of caretaker boss.

That has been executed superbly after Pompey picked up back-to-back wins before today’s game at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Awford warned against over-analysing the information at his disposal, however.

He said: ‘We look at the stats and they are very good.

‘I’ve showed the lads that and it should give them the confidence they are doing their jobs.

‘It’s about drip-feeding it in because you can give them too much info.

‘I don’t like passing stats because it becomes a competition.

‘Then the players end up playing safe because they want to get their passing stats up, rather than going for that killer ball.

‘I don’t like showing the players too much because it becomes a competition. So I don’t show them everything.’

The average top-flight player covers around eight miles per game, but Awford explained there will be variations in that figure.

He said: ‘It differs from position to position

‘You wouldn’t expect a centre-half to run as far as a full-back.

‘I think the modern-day full-back will cover the most distance – up and down up and down.

‘The centre-halves are pretty central and stay there.

‘There is an average for each position, but it varies from position to position.

‘Our lads are doing okay at the moment.’
