Paul Cook admitted Pompey had been below par – but toasted yet another win on their travels.
Matt Tubbs’ goal deep into first-half injury time sealed a 1-0 victory at Newport County this afternoon.
Conjured up by Kyle Bennett, it was a rare moment of quality in a match the Blues boss himself criticised.
Nonetheless, it represented a fifth away triumph for Pompey in League Two this season, keeping them in second place in the process.
Cook said: ‘A tinge of disappointment about how we played. I always want us to go away and people to see how good a team Portsmouth are and how well we play.
‘That just never happened today.
‘But great credit to the lads, you must be pleased they have found a way to win.
‘Away form and all form is irrelevant, there is one league table – the last league table on the last day of the season when all points have been accumulated.
‘Newport were very brave in how they played.
‘They certainly didn’t lie down at any stage of the game, but we have three points and we move on.’
