Steve Cotterill is weighing up throwing in new-boy Jason Pearce for the Reading clash.
Pearce is in contention to make his first Pompey appearance after returning to the club from Bournemouth.
The 23-year-old served a three-game ban after being sent off in the play-offs for the Cherries last season.
Cotterill has been impressed with what he has seen from the player so far.
He said: ‘It will be interesting to see how Jason does. He’s a real competitor. He’s a proper leader.
‘There’s obviously going to be an adjustment period for him.
‘But he is champing at the bit to get involved.
‘You could almost see a wry smile on his face yesterday because he’s been sitting it all out.
‘He’s been used to playing 40 games a season.
‘The only reason he doesn’t play more than that is because he gets a few bookings, which is a bone of contention, or sent off, which is a bigger bone of contention.
‘You can’t take his heart away from him, though, because he won’t be the player he is.
‘He will make us younger because some of our players will take longer to recover.
‘We have to bear that in mind.’
