Pompey’s Academy slipped to a crushing 7-0 defeat at Southampton in the FA Youth Cup tonight.
Andy Awford’s youngsters were always going to be the underdogs at St Mary’s.
Yet, once the hosts broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, it became a massive battle to keep Saints at bay.
In truth, up until Jake Hesketh’s opener the Blues had more than held their own and could have even have taken the lead when Lewis Horsburgh had been put clean through.
In the end, though, only the excellence of Blues keeper Alex Bass kept the already emphatic final scoreline down, as he produced a magnificent display in goal.
Niall Mason made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time, and after the break a Sam Gallagher hat-trick, a second for Hesketh and substitute Mark Irvine completed the result, witnessed by a crowd of 3,814 – of which 616 were Pompey fans.
