Pompey had much the better of the play throughout and needed just five minutes to break the deadlock.
Huseklepp was on hand to fire home Marko Futacs’ header at the second attempt from Kelvin Etuhu’s cross.
There were plenty of Pompey chances before Pearce doubled the advantage from Liam Lawrence’s corner before the break.
Appleton’s side were comfortable throughout the second half and wrapped it up with 10 minutes left.
Huseklepp was the man to do that with a classy finish from just inside the box, to give a bright end to another tough week.
The win sees Pompey leapfrog Peterborough into 16th place on 34 points.
