Pompey boss sees cause for attacking optimism

Yassin Moutaouakil was the coolest man in Torquay as he sent Pompey through on penalties in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tonight.

Moutaouakil got the decisive spot-kick as his side grabbed a 5-3 shootout win, following a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes at Plainmoor.

Sonny Bradley, Jed Wallace, Ricky Holmes and Tom Craddock all did the business for Guy Whittingham’s side from 12 yards.

Late, late sub Lee Mansell was sent on specifically for penalties but blasted his effort well over the top in his side’s third kick.

Then Moutaoaukil delivered an Andrea Pirlo-style clip down the middle to beat Martin Rice and send his team through their first round clash.

Guy Whittingham opted to keep changes to a minimum with just Wallace and Ryan Bird replacing the suspended David Connolly and the rested Patrick Agyemang.

He chose to use Holmes in the hole behind Bird as Pompey went with a 4-4-1-1 formation.

Andy Barcham was the first to threaten in the seventh minute when he hit a curling shot from 25 yards which Seagulls keeper Rice managed to hold.

Then the Blues had two chances from deadball situations in 60 seconds.

First Joe Devera headed goalwards from Holmes’ free-kick in the 15th minute but it failed to test Rice.

Then Bradley headed at the Torquay keeper from a Holmes corner 60 seconds later.

Pompey’s passing was patient but there was little carved out in the way of opportunities until Barcham’s effort was deflected over from Wallace’s cross eight minutes before the break.

The best chance of the half fell to Bird moments before the half-time whistle but his touch let him down as he was perfectly picked out by Wallace.

Wallace skewed the first chance of the second half well over the top moments after the restart.

The play was getting increasingly scrappy but Bird did have half a chance as he headed over Holmes’ corner after 61 minutes.

Pompey then had three chances in succession with 10 minutes left.

An excellent corner routine so nearly opened up the Torquay defence before Barcham rounded Rice but Cruise cleared off the line.

And then Bradley had a great chance to open the scoring from Holmes’ cross but Rice saved his header brilliantly.

Sullivan then made a great stop to deny Torquay sub Daniel Sullivan and ensure the game went to a shootout after 90 minutes.

And that sparked the late drama with a string of textbook penalties doing the business for Pompey before Moutaouakil sealed the win.
