Andy Awford will this week set about putting some finishing touches to his Pompey backroom.

The Blues boss is back from holiday and will drive forward with appointments within the club’s off-field set-up.

That will include Paul Hardyman promoted to first-team coach.

As revealed by The News on May 14, the former Pompey left-back has been asked by Awford to leave his Academy coaching role to join him with the seniors.

The 50-year-old initially took up the position on a temporary basis upon Awford’s caretaker appointment at the tail-end of last season.

Now the final details are being thrashed out for Hardyman to move up on a full-time basis, joining Alan McLoughlin as a first-team coach.

His elevation – along with Awford’s – has created space in the Academy set-up and the club are closing-in on filling those vacancies.

Chief scout Martin Hinshelwood, brought in by predecessor Richie Barker, is among those being considered for the Academy manager role.

The 60-year-old previously spent four years at Fratton Park with the youth team and then as reserve-team coach under Jim Smith and Terry Fenwick, before returning in January.

Yet while Barker and his other staff departed the club in March, Hinshelwood has remained and put himself in contention for a new role with the Academy set-up.

Mark Kelly is another to have put his name forward and was Pompey’s head of youth development before leaving under Paul Hart.

He was brought back to the club by Awford several years ago and remains a coach within the youth set-up.

Finally, the Blues are seeking a goalkeeping coach with Alan Knight, Dave Coles, Anthony Williams and Phil Smith all serving in the role last season.
