Ian Foster spoke of his delight as Pompey recorded a 3-1 victory over Reading’s under-21 side.

The Championship team visited the Blues’ Copnor Road training home yesterday afternoon for a behind-closed-doors fixture.

We were very comfortable, we made seven substitutions as well to give the younger players minutes on the pitch and I thought we were exceptional in the first hour

Conor Chaplin scored twice and Chad Field netted the other for the hosts, with the Royals’ Noor Husin grabbing a late consolation.

Pompey had fielded a strong side, with Gary Roberts, Nigel Atangana, Danny Hollands, Kal Naismith, Adam Webster and, of course, Chaplin all starting.

And first-team coach Foster, overseeing the side, was full of praise for his team’s display.

He said: ‘These type of games are to get much-needed match minutes into the lads who haven’t been playing in the first-team.

‘It’s also great for the technical side for the young players, making sure they play in the system we adopt in the first-team.

‘All round it was a really good workout for us.

‘I know Martin Kuhl (Reading under-21 boss) well, I have just been on a year-long course with him and asked if he could bring a strong team down and he did that – it was a really good test from our players.

‘I was really pleased. They gave us one or two problems and have terrific movement in the centre of midfield, so it’s maybe not something we might come up against in League Two but it’s certainly good for our players’ development
