Pompey finally ended their barren start to 2011 with a morale-boosting 2-0 win at Doncaster Rovers.
Goals either side of half-time from Dave Kitson and Joel Ward gave the Blues a welcome three points - their first victory in 11 games since December 11 last year.
The Blues were solid, disciplined and looked a threat going forward with a performance that made a mockery of their recent run.
Kitson struck with a close-range header just three minutes before the break as he bravely nodded home a rebound after Greg Halford’s shot came back off the upright.
And Ward sealed the points soon after the restart with a cool lob after latching on to David Nugent’s flick-on.
The only blot on Pompey’s copybook was a late red card for Jonathan Hogg - who was sent off for two yellow cards in stoppage time.
But it was a richly deserved win in front of a tremendous away following who kept up the noise non-stop throughout the second half.
