Pompey’s dreams of a trip to Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy were ended after a 2-1 home loss to Northampton Town.

The Blues fell behind midway through the first half when David Moyo slotted home with a smart finish off the inside of the post.

But Andy Awford’s side hit back shortly before half-time, when Taylor – who had earlier seen a full-length diving header whistle past the post – netted the equaliser.

Alex Wynter found him with a ball into the box and the striker took his time, beat the defender and produced a cool finish to level matters.

But after Jed Wallace was substituted at half-time, Pompey were nowhere near the same threat going forward after the break.

The Cobblers clinched the win in the 55th minute when Kaid Mohamed tapped home from close range.

And despite a very late rally, it was not enough from Pompey to find a way back into the contest.
