POMPEY started their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw at non-league neighbours Hawks.

Paul Cook’s side looked like a team missing cohesion in the first half and fell behind in the 21st minute as Adrian Clifton headed home from a set-piece.

The Blues, meanwhile, struggled to get anything going in the first 45 minutes with Matt Tubbs unable to take the only two half-chances that came his way, firstly glancing a header wide and then failing to convert Jayden Stockley’s cut-back.

Pompey, however, made 10 substitutions at half-time and were much improved after the break with Gary Roberts, Michael Doyle and Kyle Bennett at the hub of much of the enterprising work going forward.

Doyle restored parity just three minutes after the restart with a drilled shot through a crowd of players.

And Pompey should have gone on to win the game with the impressive Roberts wasting one glorious chance to make it 2-1.

Bennett went close with a low curler, while triallist Theo Robinson should have done better with a couple of opportunities.

But the honours remained even as both clubs started their path towards the new campaign.

POMPEY: (first half) Michael Poke, Connor Randall, Brandon Haunstrup, Gareth Evans, Paul Robinson, Christian Burgess, Danny Hollands, Nigel Atangana, Matt Tubbs, Jayden Stockley, Kal Naismith.

POMPEY: (second half) Paul Jones, Ben Davies, Adam Webster, Christian Burgess (Snorre Nilsen, 77), Enda Stevens, Michael Doyle, Ben Close, Kyle Bennett, Gary Roberts, Theo Robinson, Conor Chaplin.
