Pompey memories day at Fratton Park

Pompey are asking older fans to share their memories at a special event at Fratton Park as part of a drive to capture a social history of the club.

The Blues are hosting a memories day in the Alliance Lounge on Wednesday, March 23, (10am to 2pm) when fans aged 60 and over will be encouraged to come along and share their recollections of bygone eras.

The club’s history group will be looking to record the memories for posterity as part of a longer-term project to eventually create a Portsmouth FC museum and archive.

Using artefacts and memorabilia at the event to jog memories, the club is particularly looking for accounts of attending matches at Fratton Park in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

Colin Farmery, who heads up history and archiving projects at the club, said: ‘We have many older fans who have a wealth of knowledge and experience of supporting the club and we want to start collecting and curating those memories.

‘Fans aged 60 or above can just turn up and we will have a team of volunteers ready to help record their memories for posterity.

‘We will be putting on a display of programmes, newspapers and artefacts, but we would also encourage fans to come along with their own memorabilia.

‘Things like period scarves, pin badges, rattles and photographs really help bring the supporter experience to life.’
