SPORTS commentator and Pompey fan Ian Darke hopes a sponsored mile run could add money to Portsmouth Football Club’s coffers.
Mr Darke has come up with the ‘Pompey Mile’ – which would see 5,000 people come together and run or walk a mile in the city.
He said: ‘If each person could get sponsorship of £200 then it would raise £1m.
‘We could get fans, ex-players and even current players involved and get them wearing blue.’
Mr Darke also said he would like the money to be used to pay staff wages.
‘The money would go to the Pompey Supporters Trust, and do what they thought was best,’ he added.
‘I’ve supported Pompey since I was seven years old and I know the fans are itching to do something.
‘I know it’s not going to solve the club’s problems.
‘Pompey is the soul of the city and if we go down it won’t be quietly or easily.’
Scott Mclachlan, spokesman for the Pompey Supporters Trust, said: ‘I think it’s a fantastic idea.
‘The fans need some good news and with this people aged one to 100 could take part and raise money.
‘We would have to sit down and discuss where the money would go with the administrators.
‘If we did raise £1m it would be brilliant, but we’d need to see where it was better used – with the club or with a new Pompey.’
