Pompey Nostalgia: Lualua stuns Liverpool

On this day in 2004, Lomana Lualua equalised in the final minute to earn Pompey an impressive 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

Steven Gerrard had put the Reds in front from 30 yards with an unstoppable free-kick that flew past Jamie Ashdown at the Kop end.

But the Blues would have the final say as Velimir Zajec’s men salvaged a late point to the delight of the travelling Fratton faithful when Jerzy Dudek failed to deal with Matty Taylor’s cross and Lualua pounced from close range.

Liverpool would go on to win the Champions League that season with a remarkable comeback win over AC Milan in Istanbul.

Pompey meanwhile, finished the season in 16th position under the management of Alain Perrin.

Harry Redknapp, who started the campaign in charge of the Blues, made the switch to fierce rivals Southampton only to see them relegated from the top flight in bottom spot.
