Andy Awford is refusing to be rushed into signing Trevor Carson.
The Pompey boss vowed he will bide his time before making a decision on his goalkeeper additions.
And that means keeping his options open over a move for Jamie Ashdown.
Ashdown told The News this week he would love a return to the club he served for eight years, after leaving Leeds.
With Phil Smith departing Fratton Park, that leaves John Sullivan as the club’s only senior goalkeeper.
Despite having a year left on his existing agreement, Sullivan looks to be out of favour after being sent out on loan last season.
Awford knows he will have to make moves in that area.
But, even with Carson impressing in his loan stay from Bury, he won’t be panicked into making an offer for his services.
Awford said: ‘It’s still ongoing with Trevor.
‘I know where he is and he knows where I am.
‘We know what Trevor can do. He is out of contract at Bury but I am not going to rush it.
‘Jamie is one of a number of players who we are interested in.
‘The goalkeeping situation is one I need to address and I will address it at the right time.’
Awford is waiting for further news on additions after a move for Danny Holllands accelerated on Wednesday, with the Pompey boss earlier not anticipating any arrivals.
He said: ‘I have given the board and Mark (Catlin) the targets and they deal with that side of things.
‘I don’t get involved in the contract negotiations too much. That is for other people.’
