Pompey’s hopes of avoiding the drop from the Championship come into sharp focus as they host fellow strugglers Bristol City this weekend.

The Blues are currently eight points adrift of safety but can give themselves a major confidence boost with victory over the Robins, who are currently fourth from bottom.

But it’s been a desperate run for Michael Appleton’s side, who have not tasted victory since the 3-0 win at Peterborough in January – eight games ago.

While momentum is key for any side attempting to drag themselves out of trouble, a win could bring the Blues back into the fight with a run of winnable games coming up and could inject belief back into the ranks.

So should Appleton gamble in a bid to get Pompey scoring again?

Or should the defensive solidity lay the foundations for what could prove to be a tight encounter against a side who will be nervously looking over their shoulders?
