In front of a then record Fratton Park crowd of 48,581, this clip from 1949 shows Third Division Newport County almost pulling off an FA Cup shock against Pompey.

Despite Pompey taking a third-minute lead, they were made to sweat by the Welsh club, who dominated for most of the proceedings.

Two goals from Glen Phillips and an extra-time winner from Jack Froggatt were enough to see Pompey progress on the day, despite Bert Barlow’s missed penalty.

It’s the first and only time the Exiles have ever made the fifth round, with Pompey reaching the semi-finals that season and also going on to win the First Division.

The gap between the two teams was so immense that the Hampshire Telegraph and Post called it ‘Newport’s finest hour’.
