This win took Pompey into second place in division two and made them almost certain for promotion with a clear points lead over other clubs. Fratton Park patrons, before or since, have seldom seen a team as over-run as Notts County as Pompey headed for their record victory.

Four goals came in the first 22 minutes but County got one back before the interval. The second half saw five more goals for Pompey, with Willie Haines helping himself to a hat-trick. Mackie and winger Freddie Cook each scored twice, with the excellent Forward and Reg Davies each claiming one each.

The match was played out in deplorable conditions of heavy rain but the drenched crowd of 15 000 were well rewarded. Pompey now had a far greater goal average than their league rivals which was worth another point towards the race for promotion.
