Portsmouth boss not yet worried over Millwall recall for Thompson

Kenny Jackett is not yet contemplating the possibility of losing man-of-the-moment Ben Thompson in January.

The in-form midfielder is attached to Pompey on a season-long loan from Millwall.

However, the arrangement consists of a recall option for his parent club in January.

Such have been the high quality of Thompson's Fratton Park displays since his August arrival, there remain concerns among supporters he could return to the Championship earlier than anticipated.

Tuesday night's 2-2 draw with Burton earned him successive man-of-the-match accolades.

Yet Jackett is not currently thinking about Thompson's ongoing Blues presence.

The Pompey boss said: '˜That is still two months away, as a football manager you don't worry too long in the future.

'˜Obviously Ben is Millwall's player, so it's very much up to them what the situation is at that particular time with their midfield players.

'˜The recall is a standard loan option. For us he has settled well, settled quickly.

'˜We have been pleased with him and he has fitted in well in terms of as a person and a lad.

'˜But we understand he's a Millwall player at present and on loan to us.

'˜We will deal with it when it comes. If Ben stays with us we'll be delighted and if he is recalled by his parent club there is not a lot we can do about that, it is obviously their decision.

'˜He played very well on Tuesday night, with a man-of-the-match display again.

'˜Neil (Harris) is somebody I speak to regularly anyway '“ and I am sure he will be aware of how Ben is doing.'

Millwall, who are presently 19th in the Championship, beat Paul Cook's Wigan 2-1 on Tuesday night.

They operate in a 4-4-2 formation, featuring a central midfield comprising of captain Shaun Williams and Ryan Leonard '“ a player whose loan turns into a club-record fee when made permanent in January.

Of the other contenders, ex-Fulham man Ryan Tunnicliffe is presently on the bench, while Jem Karacan is struggling to break into the squad.

Thompson himself has represented the Lions only in Carabao Cup action this season, while last term was used in just three Championship fixtures.

Certainly boss Neil Harris appears well stocked for centre midfielders at a time when the home-grown talent continues to impress during his south-coast loan.

Regardless, Pompey's boss has been delighted with Thompson's form during 13 outings to date.

Jackett added: '˜I think Ben has been pretty consistent for us.

'˜It takes you a little while to get up to match pace when you are coming in after not playing for a while, whoever you are it's pretty difficult.

'˜It almost looks like pre-season for quite a few players, but he has come through that and established himself in the team in a very short space of time, being a consistent performer for us.'
