JOE DEVERA has been heralded as one of the bright points of Pompey’s season.

And the defender’s been praised for showing the consistency his team have been missing.

Devera’s form has been a stand-out as the Blues have ended their nine-game winless run and picked up three clean sheets on the bounce.

The 28-year-old has been typically resilient this season, with his current contract coming to a close in the summer.

The former Barnet man started four games on the bounce before being left out at Wycombe.

He has then impressed in a back three in the win over Hartlepool and draw at Dagenham.

Andy Awford feels Devera is one of the unsung heroes of his team’s campaign.

The man who arrived from Swindon last summer offers an unassuming approach which Awford admitted makes his life easier.

Awford said: ‘Joe is fine.

‘He’s a great pro. He comes in every day and does his job.

‘I think some of the press have a problem because he doesn’t say too much!

‘But he does his work, doesn’t say much and then cracks the odd dry joke.

‘He then gets in his car, drives off and then gets in his car and plays Saturday.

‘Maybe he’s a bit droll like Alan Knight!

‘But he is no problem whatsoever.

‘I find him an easy player to manage.

‘He’s a lovely lad and he’s playing well for us at the moment. He’s done well for us this season.’

Devera has appeared in 26 of Pompey’s 35 games this season, scoring the winner against Stevenage in October.

That has arrived as part of a total of 63 outings since he was signed by Guy Whittingham.

Awford believes he has shown a dependability and solidity for his team in that time.

The Pompey boss admitted similar traits have sadly been lacking from his team as a whole this season.

Awford said: ‘There isn’t the consistency in this league and we heve fallen into this bracket worse than some others.

‘We are where we are now because the table doesn’t lie after 29 games.

‘Joe hasn’t been like that. ‘Joe’s a steady player.

‘He’s not an up and down player.

‘Joe hasn’t been like us. He hasn’t reflected us as a team.

‘Of late he’s come in and done a good job. I’m pleased with him.

‘The problem this season has been the consistency of results.

‘The consistency of performances has been a bit better but not the results.

‘We’ve struggled for consistency.

‘But we can all see the confidence building.

‘We can all see the confidence coming back with the way we’re playing.’
