Pompey made it successive home wins with an impressive 2-0 victory over Coventry City.
Yet they had Simon Eastwood to thank following an outstanding goalkeeping display in the Blues’ goal.
The former Huddersfield man pulled off a string of magnificent stops, including a penalty save against Gary McSheffrey in the seventh minute.
The Sky Blues rued that miss when Jed Wallace netted in the 15th minute after exchanging passes with Shaun Cooper.
That lead was doubled in the 76th minute as Patrick Agyemang headed home Liam Walker’s sublime deep cross from the left.
Eastwood made several saves even after that and it was Guy Whittingham’s men who triumphed, rising two places off the bottom of League One.
Whittingham made just the one change, with Cooper in for Dan Butler, ending five matches of naming the same team.
Coventry were handed the opportunity to break the deadlock from the penalty spot in only the sixth minute of match action.
Cooper was adjudged by the linesman to have tripped Cody McDonald, with McSheffrey given spot-kick duties.
However, Eastwood flung himself low to his right to push the ball out for a corner.
The visitors were made to pay for that in the 15th minute when Wallace scored at the other end,
The midfielder produced a one-two with Cooper to cut across the penalty area and drove a right-foot shot high into the net.
The Sky Blues went close to equalising in the 26th minute when Cyrus Christie cut in from the right and unleashed an angled drive which only just cleared the bar.
Pompey themselves had appeals for a penalty in the 33rd minute when Cooper went down under a challenge from Aaron Martin, but nothing was given.
In the 46th minute a wickedly-swerving 25-yarder from Christie drew a magnificent flying stop from Eastwood, who finger-tipped the ball out for a corner.
At the other end, a Wallace cross from the right sparked chaos, with Liam Walker’s shot blocked by William Edjenguele and then Johnny Ertl lashing the follow-up high over the bar.
But Eastwood again came to the hosts’ rescue, firstly Aaron Martin fired in a shot from distance which the keeper parried and he then applied the finest of touches to nudge Franck Moussa’s follow-up wide.
In the 68th minute it was the former Bradford keeper once more, superbly tipping over Moussa’s fierce-angled drive.
However, Pompey increased their lead in the 76th minute when Walker swung in a first-time left-foot cross which Agyemang rose to head home and seal victory.
