Cardiff proved too strong for 10-man Pompey as they cruised to a 3-0 win today.
Goals from Seyi Olofinjana, Jay Bothroyd and Peter Whittingham did the damage for the promotion chasers.
But the game swung on Richardo Rocha’s red card after 18 minutes, following a clash with Bothroyd.
The Portuguese defender picked up his second red card in three games after going head to head with the striker.
Rocha made the approach to the Cardiff man and paid for that with red – although he left the pitch with blood streaming down his face.
Pompey regrouped after Olofinjana’s sixth-minute opener, but Bothroyd’s poked finish from a couple of yards just before the break was crucial.
Cardiff controlled play with the extra man after the break, with Craig Bellamy running the game.
And they added a third with 17 minutes left through Whittingham.
Pompey, to their credit, kept to their uphill task but created little.
Sub Danny Webber twice went close after coming on, with Liam Lawrence also testing Stephen Bywater.
But it was largely an afternoon to forget for Steve Cotterill’s men, with four games now left this season.
