John Utaka’s three-and-a-half-year stay at Pompey has come to an end.
The Blues have confirmed the 29-year-old Nigerian striker has joined French Ligue 1 side Montpellier, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal.
Utaka has good experience of the French top tier, having joined Pompey from Rennes for £7m in the summer of 2007.
While at Rennes, he scored 22 goals in 63 games, prompting then Pompey manager Harry Redknapp to bring him to the south coast.
However, Utaka never really lived up to such a hefty price tag.
And despite scoring on his Premier League debut against Derby at Pride Park, he was never able to repeat his form in England.
In the 115 appearances he made for the Blues, Utaka scored only 13 goals - his last being in the 2-1 defeat against Burnley on Tuesday night.
Montpellier are currently seventh in the Ligue 1 table.
