Andy Awford joked he had signed Gianluca Vialli on a four-year deal, yet the Chelsea hero was present for a very different reason.

The Italian was at Fratton Park last night to launch the club’s FanFunding project aimed at raising money for the Blues’ Academy.

The scheme, which is run in conjunction with Tifosy, is targeting £250,000 in 61 days to fund two Academy training pitches at Roko.

And Vialli, fronting the project for Tifosy, is excited about the plan.

He said: ‘I want to leave a legacy and this idea is great, it is going to revolutionise the way fans and football clubs work together.

‘It will allow football clubs to listen to the fans and they can work hand in hand to try to build for the future.

‘This campaign is just perfect with Portsmouth, it is a pioneering club in that they are owned by the fans and have a project to build training facilities which we want to support.’
