Andy Awford was full of praise for his Pompey battlers as they claimed a 2-1 win over Cambridge United in their first home League Two fixture of the season.

Pompey extended their lead through a bizarre Tom Bonner own goal.

But Cambridge responded almost immediately through Kwesi Appiah to leave Pompey to hold out for the final 20 minutes or so – a task they completed with courage and roared on by the Blues fans.

Awford said: ‘We needed that character to get the win and we showed that in bundles.

‘Everyone put in a huge shift.

‘We got the goal up and I felt we were good for it, but then we went down to 10 men.

‘That changed the game for the second half but I couldn’t have asked for more from each and every one of them.

‘The first goal was a great ball, a great run, and a great header from Ryan Taylor – we’d worked on it in training and it was so good to see it come off.

‘I had a few goosebumps in the second half when the crowd really got behind us.

‘But we’re delighted to have got the win for them.’
