Guy Whittingham is seeking to tie up an extension for Bondz N’Gala before Monday.
The defender’s existing one-month deal expires in six day’s time.
During his stay he has made two appearances, including a first league start against Mansfield on Saturday.
With Adam Webster on loan at Aldershot, N’Gala represents Pompey’s sole cover in central defensive areas.
The 23-year-old, who initially appeared in a pre-season friendly against the Hawks, has impressed Whittingham during his time at Fratton Park.
And he is eager for the former Stevenage defender to remain as part of his squad.
The Blues boss said: ‘Deadline day is next Monday and Bondz’s contract also finishes then so I am sure something will happen before.
‘To extend Bondz you would have to do something before then because we would have had him in for a month.
‘You also have to consider the player’s situation.
‘If I am a player I would want to make sure I knew what I am going to be doing before the transfer window shuts.
‘If I know the deal is not going to be extended then I want my agent to find me something else or I’ll find something else myself.
‘Bondz has been excellent, he gets on with his work, he’s like you expect a footballer to be with lots of banter, but he knows when to work on the training pitch and we are very impressed.
‘He puts his body in front of shots all the time in training, he is not scared of putting himself on the line.’
Meanwhile, Pompey’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy fixture at Torquay has been confirmed as Tuesday, September 3.
Whittingham’s men were matched with The Gulls during the southern section – west part of the first-round draw.
Plainmoor ticket details have still to be released, although the kick-off has been set for 7.45pm.
The Blues have not met Torquay since the League Cup in August 1999.
On that occasion, Pompey ran out 3-0 winners to go through on aggregate.
More recently, they beat Torquay 3-0 in a July 2006 pre-season friendly under Harry Redknapp.
