Whittingham said the three points was for those who have followed their team home and away regardless of the winless run,.
He said: ‘It’s a relief, really. It’s a great feeling.
‘While I’m happy for the players. I can’t be happier for anyone more than the fans.
‘They have been superb for us. This is for them more than anyone else.’
Goals from Patrick Agyemang and David Connolly made the difference for Pompey.
Whittingham felt the win was warranted - but was still biting his nails as the home side piled forward in the second half.
He said: ‘I kept telling the ref the time on his watch was wrong.
‘I was a bit worried but it’s natural really because we haven’t picked up results.
‘But we got there and we deserved it.’
