Pompey Ladies are in great shape ahead of the new season.
That’s the verdict of prolific striker Charley Wilson.
It’s been a summer of change, with Perry Northeast and Katie Poore taking charge of the team.
But somethings never change and, as ever, Wilson has been firing in the goals.
She netted once in the 5-2 friendly win at Maidenhead.
The striker then bagged a treble in the 6-0 success at Swindon.
She is clearly enjoying her football.
‘This pre-season has been one of the best Pompey have ever had,’ said Wilson.
‘We’ve not just been working on fitness but also on ball work.
‘Everybody is putting in 100 per cent in training and it’s been great.
‘The friendlies have gone well.
‘We were getting to know each other against Maidenhead with some new players.
‘But we looked a lot better against Swindon.
‘I want to try and get as many goals as I can in the friendlies and take it into the season.
‘For me, it is about believing in my ability, being consistent and confident.’
Plenty of new players are aiming to force their way into the Pompey squad.
It makes for an exciting blend of youth and experience and a good vibe in training.
Wilson said: ‘The atmosphere is really good.
‘The new girls have fitted in lovely.
‘Everyone is happy – we’re all putting the effort in and enjoying it.’
Former boss Vanessa Raynbird was in charge for more than a decade.
But she stepped down at the end of last season to take on a business manager role.
Northeast and Poore have taken over and carried on the good work.
And Wilson feels learning from different methods and different ideas can only be a help to the players.
She said: ‘Vanessa is outstanding for ladies’ football.
‘Perry is really good at the football side of things and he will improve players.
‘I’m an experienced player but he will improve my game.
‘The youngsters that are coming through have great potential and Perry will improve them as well.
‘Also, our fitness coach Jason Campbell is superb.
‘He really can help you out if you want to improve your strength or anything else.’
