Gosport & Stokes Bay ladies are celebrating after edging past local rivals Lee-on-the-Solent to lift the inaugural Solent Bay trophy.

Captain Jackie Urry came up with the idea for her year at the helm and contacted Lee counterpart, Carol Fletcher, to plan the two-day event.

The format saw 18 ladies from each club play six singles, three foursomes and three betterball matches on both courses across the two days.

And it was fitting that the event got the match it deserved as a memorable battle came down to the very last game with Stokes Bay snatching a 12.5 to 11.5 victory.

Winning captain Urry said: ‘I wanted to do something different in my year as captain.

‘I knew it would be a Ryder Cup year so I thought I wanted to do a team event.

‘Playing against Lee-on-the-Solent was the obvious choice as they are just up the road and there is a friendly rivalry between the clubs.

‘But this has brought us closer together now.

‘It was a friendly match with a nice atmosphere but of course we both wanted to win.

‘I was proud to be captain but it was played in a great spirit against the Lee ladies and we’re already looking forward to 2016.’
