Scott Gregory’s bid to lift the English Amateur Championship ended in heartbreak as he went down 2&1 in the final to Nick Marsh at Saunton.
The Waterlooville-based amateur enjoyed a fabulous run to the final but found himself one down at the end of the first 18 holes of the 36-hole showdown.
Marsh moved four holes ahead with a run of birdies and despite the Corhampton man grinding away to reduce the deficit to two, he eventually ran out of holes.
Gregory said: ‘I’m very happy for what I have done this week.
‘I kept fighting back all day.
‘I’ll never give up but Nick played really well, he’s a great champion and it was a pleasure playing with him.
‘I expect most people expected him to win but I gave it my best shot and I’m happy with the way I performed.
‘I’ve had a great week and the final showed I can play well under pressure and now I’ve got to push on to be one of the best in the country.’
