PORTSMOUTH School of Gymnastics toasted a memorable 2014 as they retained The News Sports Awards’ young team of the year title, before insisting: We didn’t want to give it up.

And it proved double success for the Farlington-based TeamGym outfit at last Thursday’s Kings Theatre ceremony, as they also claimed the top prize in the prestigious ‘team of the year’ category.

The triumphant junior squad were Southern Area winners, gold medallists on the national stage and made their mark on the international scene in a busy year of competition.

Amy Brown was delighted to win the young team award for a second successive year and looked back on a memorable 12 months in competition.

The stand-out moment for the team was representing Great Britain in the European TeamGym Championships final in Iceland – placing them sixth in Europe.

Brown said: ‘It felt really, really good to win this award and it tops off everything that we achieved in 2014.

‘We won the same title last year and didn’t want to give it up!

‘The highlight of the year was definitely the European Championships – just walking out and hearing the crowd and all the support we got from everyone was amazing.

‘Our goals will remain the same this year as we target more success at the European Championships and try to defend our Southern and British titles.’
