A record-breaking field put on a spectacular show in the annual novice festival at Portsmouth Gymnastics Centre.

The Alex Way venue was buzzing as spectators were treated to a fantastic array of routines.

A record 182 competitors, aged between four and 15, demonstrated their skills on the floor and the vault.

They had spent many hours perfecting their routines and the hard work paid off in style.

Medals were awarded to the top three boys and girls in each age group but every competitor went home with a prize donated by Parkwood Community Leisure.

Centre manager Jo Dallas was impressed with the level of performance on show.

She said: ‘The competition was a great success.

‘It was clear to see the children had worked hard to remember routines and master their vaults.

‘The parents and other spectators cheered all the gymnasts which gave the competition a fantastic atmosphere.

‘The day ran smoothly and on time, due to the hard work of staff and volunteers.

‘Also, the addition of the squad display was a great incentive for the children to continue to improve and commit to their hobby.’
