Three hockey starlets have been labelled as ‘Team GB stars of the future’ after they were selected for Great Britain Youth Olympic squads.
Teenage trio Daniel Faulkner, from Fareham, Sam Hatherley, of Four Marks, and Widley’s Rebecca van Berkel are all graduates of Havant hockey club’s acclaimed junior set-up.
And the talented 18-year-olds, who have all since left the Barncroft Way outfit for pastures new, have been picked to compete at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) in Sydney in January.
Inspired by Team GB’s outstanding success at London 2012, the 18-strong men’s and women’s squads will be aiming to use the AYOF as a springboard towards their dreams of representing Britain at future Olympic Games.
And Mark England believes the tournament will provide an invaluable experience to the young players.
Team GB’s Chef de Mission said: ‘It is an exciting time to lead this group of exceptionally talented young athletes.
‘I’m confident the AYOF will prove to be an invaluable experience in progressing their international sporting careers as they aim to bridge the gap between youth and senior representation.’
The five-day AYOF starts on January 16 and will see around 1,700 athletes aged 13-19 from 30 nations competing across 17 Olympic sports in many of the venues used to host the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.
