HAYWARDS HEATH basketball man Frank Gainsbury was one of three Sussex statisticians who had a memorable time at the Olympics.

Gainsbury is now chairman of Worthing Thunder and joined two others with Thunder connections, Alan Sweetman-Hicks and Owen Peck.

Gainsbury said: “It was just amazing and a life-time experience. The people were so friendly and it means a lot to say I had been involved.

“I was appointed to the opening game which was the first USA game and it just made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.”

He later officiated in the ladies final which was watched by more than 12,000 people.
