More than 1,000 athletes expected for duathlon at 'iconic' Goodwood

A duathlon will be held at Goodwood motor circuit later this year.

Mass Participation Events (MPE) yesterday announced the competition.

The duathlon, scheduled for May, combines a run with a cycle ride followed by a second run.

And MPE reckon it could attract more than 1,000 runners and cyclists from all over the south east of England.

Ideal for anyone wanting a fitness challenge, the duathlon offers a 16-week period for training, combining the two complementary disciplines.

MPE managing director Kevin Stewart said: 'With the World Duathlon Championships featuring in Great Britain's sporting calendar, the sport's profile is really taking off.'

Stewart revealed central to the event's planning was an iconic location.

And Goodwood House fitted the bill superbly.

'If there is one thing duathlon in the UK has lacked, it's an iconic location for an event. Goodwood fills the gap with its location, facilities, route and scenery.

'It will become a must-do event for athletes seeking a challenge.'

The event is split into two categories, the full and the half. In the full race, a 10K run and 40k bike ride are followed by a 5K run.

The half consists of two 4K runs and a 20K bike ride.

Stewart said: 'We're trying to make it suitable for people with a range of fitness levels.

'Entrants can even do the run in two or three person relay teams.'

The race is planned for the Goodwood race circuit and surrounding roads.

Stewart added: "It's very scenic, the route runs past Goodwood racecourse and offers spectacular views over the channel before descending through the Goodwood Estate, passing Goodwood House.'

Runners will be split into five-year bands so each participant is judged in their own age group.
