Sheer determination, belief and the hunger to win is the key to success for one team in Gosport.
Antonio’s have had a fantastic campaign, losing just two games so far – and twice overcoming the division’s top side.
The division three outfit entered the Gosport & Fareham League in 2001 – under the name of Misfits – and have performed well ever since.
In past campaigns they have gained promotion several times, with a stint in the second tier a couple of seasons ago.
Captain Zara Woodman said: ‘Last season we narrowly avoided relegation to division four, but this time around we are sitting in a promotion spot in division three.
‘It just goes to show what you can achieve with sheer determination, belief and the hunger to win.
‘We have really enjoyed this season.
‘We have got some consistency and the girls have played their socks off every game – and that has paid off.’
Two wins over table-toppers Youngstars Red – 36-32 and 39-31 respectively – have boosted the team.
And they haven’t lost a single game since the opening two games of the season.
‘I’m very proud of the girls,’ added Woodman.
‘If we hadn’t had some registration issues at the beginning of the season, we would have won all of our games so the girls have done brilliantly.’
However, the skipper appreciates that division two will be an even greater challenge.
She said: ‘If we can gain promotion, we know it will be tough in division two as we have been there before.
‘There are some great teams in so we know it will be a challenge.’
And with ongoing sponsorship from Antonio’s restaurant in Fareham, the financial worries that many teams have to cope with, are minimised.
‘It is great to be representing Antonios’s restaurant in Fareham and we are extremely grateful for their continued sponsorship,’ Woodman added.
‘It is a huge help and means the usual financial worries are reduced.’
Antonio’s next game is their re-scheduled game next Wednesday at 7pm against Gosport Borough Mavericks.
