The tide seems to be turning for one determined team in the Gosport & Fareham League.
Hughes & King are sitting on top of division six after a tough few seasons and are hoping this is the start of their rise back up the divisions.
They are unbeaten in their division after seven games.
Team captain Lisa King hopes that keeping a consistent side together can help them gain promotion this season.
She said: ‘It’s fantastic news that we are currently at the top of division six.
‘We have worked really well together and have a consistent team this season, which is important.’
And with five games remaining, King is hoping their good fortune continues.
‘We are all extremely pleased with our start to the season and we are hoping our efforts and determination will earn us promotion back up to division five,’ she added.
Hughes & King returned to the Gosport & Fareham League in September 2009.
They had taken some time out due to injuries and other commitments.
But by autumn 2011, the team had risen to division four.
They suffered a blow in the summer of 2012 when they were relegated to division five.
That was a tough campaign and they had to brace themselves for a possible return to division six.
But the team, originally known as A & J Bull, have a great bond together – with three players who have been playing together for around a decade.
‘A & J Bull was formed many years ago, before I joined the team, but myself, Paula Singh and Suzy Gudgeon have been playing netball together for approximately 10 years,’ added King.
‘We have seen a few players come and go over the years but now have a strong, consistent team.
‘Hayley Dyke joined the team around 2008, along with her sister-in-law Rebecca Dyke – who is currently not playing because she is expecting her second child this summer.
‘Sharon Tribble joined the team three years ago after a 10-year gap and Natalie Izzard joined in May 2012, along with Louise Brenton in September 2012.
‘Lorraine Sherwood has also been a great support to the team for the past two years, as our super sub.
‘She will happily play when needed.
‘Everyone in the team is employed in the education sector.
‘So we all enjoy meeting for netball, not just for the exercise but on a social level, too.’
Hughes & King’s next match is on Thursday, June 13, against Karadents (7pm).
