Catherine Hutchin has spoken of her pride at the rise of Fishbourne Flames.

The Portsmouth League outfit have been relishing their maiden campaign in the fourth division.

Based at the Fishbourne Centre, they earned promotion from the fifth tier last term.

Hutchin, the captain, revealed the side’s delight at that achievement.

And she admitted they are loving their new surroundings.

The skipper said: ‘I am so proud of the team and our achievements.

‘We were incredibly excited to be promoted to division four.

‘And we are enjoying the challenges that come with playing in a higher division.

‘We can’t wait for a Tuesday evening and always look forward to our end of season night out!’

The Fishbourne side formed in April 2006 – when they started playing at the Fishbourne Centre, just outside Chichester.

The team got together through their love of netball – each player grabbing the opportunity to keep fit and have fun at the same time.

Training regularly, the group soon considered forming a competitive team that could take part in the local league.

It was an idea that appealed to many, so in August 2010 the team affiliated with England Netball and registered with the Portsmouth Netball Association as the Fishbourne Flames.

As they progressed, players such as Lucy Morris, Liz Adlington and Laura Maddicks demonstrated an interest in learning umpiring skills.

They have since taken part in introductory courses, although these skills need further development before they are put into practice in league games.

Hutchin, meanwhile, now balances a busy home and work life with her Flames commitments.

She ensures the side is well informed of match dates, training sessions and any opportunities to improve their skills.

Sporting a red, white and blue kit, the ladies are fortunate to be sponsored by the Fishbourne Centre, Game, Set & Match – a local sports shop who helped create the kit – and Lexus Croydon.

The Flames players are a wide range of ages, while all boasting different levels of experience.

But they all share a common goal – a real love for netball.

The current squad is made up of Hutchin, Adlington, Caroline Dixon, Su Leeming, Rosie Leeming, Angela Ruscoe, Sue Cooper, Kylee Charles, Tina Murden, Bernie Twigg, Morris and Maddicks.
