Jews keep on thinking the world is out to get them

One issue bound to raise the hackles of a few readers is Israel.

Any criticism of Israel stirs the 'my country right or wrong' brigade – even if it isn't their country.

Not only that; anyone who speaks out on behalf of the Palestinians must be a dupe of the Arabs or purveyor of Arab propaganda.

So look away now or prepare your pens, comrades.

Centuries of anti-Jewish feeling and pogroms led ultimately to the Holocaust, but also Zionism.

And it is Zionism that keeps Jews believing that the world is out to get them.

Moreover, it is because so many non-Jews are sensitive to the Jewish tragedy and are afraid of offending Zionists that Israel is allowed to get away with its arrogant regime.

The world was not silent over racist South Africa, so why is it silent over Israel?

It is worth remembering that, just like the white South Africans, Israelis are settlers. Disparate peoples from around the world, with a common Jewish religion, took over the lands once occupied by indigenous Palestinians, a great number of whom were expelled or killed by the settlers who then took possession of the land. The slaughter of Arabs continues up to today.

Israeli leaders maintain that they launched Operation Cast Lead, which killed 1,400 Palestinians, to put an end to years of rocket fire from Gaza on Israeli border towns. Since then they have cut off Gaza's 1.4m people from the rest of the world, so causing starvation and erosion of livelihoods.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has ignored UN and US demands to freeze the building of new settlements on the occupied West Bank. So Israel continues work on 2,500 new homes and has plans to build many more. Not only does this go against Barack Obama's peace plan, it flouts Israel's previous commitments under the Bush 2003 roadmap.

Meanwhile, Britain and the US continue to sell arms to Israel. Even more important, the US provides a direct subsidy to Israel of $4bn a year. As long as this carries on, Israel will continue to do as it likes.

WELCOME TO FINANCIAL GREED OF BONKERS BANKERS

While bankers stuff their pockets, ministers sacrifice jobs to help them.

These are the people who brought down the global economy in a speculative orgy of reckless greed.

Far from being brought to account or handcuffed, they are now rewarded with the biggest bail-out in history. Not only are they left in charge of the financial system, they can once more award themselves record bonuses as hundreds of thousands are put on the dole as a result of their failures.

Some bonkers bankers try to justify it all by comparing themselves to celebrity footballers or Hollywood stars.

Fagin and Shylock come more readily to mind.

IT'S A SHAME PEOPLE DERIDE HEROISM OF THE RED ARMY

What a shame that rabid anti-communists should use the 70th anniversary of the Second World War to defame the Red Army. By equating Nazism with Soviet communism, they ignore the part played by the Soviet people and their leaders in defeating Nazi Germany. Or, indeed, the 25 million Soviet war victims – far, far more than any other nation.

One reactionary historian, Orlando Figes, has called the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact a 'licence for the Holocaust'.

He thereby seeks to distract blame from the appeasers of Hitler in the French and British governments, as well as fascist sympathisers among the ruling circles of Europe.
