Doug's the carp king

Doug McAvery is celebrating success in the inaugural Allan Watson Memorial Carp Cup.

The triumphant angler fished the method feeder to land 14 carp and bits for 66lb 3oz.

But despite his winning haul, McAvery did not net the biggest fish of the competition.

Instead, the heaviest carp prize went – fittingly – to Watson's son-in-law Gavin Addiscott, on his angling debut.

Sixteen members of the newly-formed Stamshaw Lake AC Carp Club turned out at MBK's Barrons Pond to fish for the Allan Watson Memorial Cup.

The trophy was introduced recently in recognition of the service Watson – The News' former Reel Thing columnist – made to the angling club through his tackle shop Allans Marine in Stamshaw.

McAvery's bag won the day and, although second-placed Kevin Franks used the same tactics, he was three carp and more than 33lb adrift of the victor.

Third spot went to Peter Harris, on his maiden freshwater outing, with 26lb 14oz.

None of their carp could compare to Addiscott's best, though.

Up until this match, he had never picked up a fishing rod. And after fishing all day without a single bite, he latched on to a fine carp of 11lb 4oz in the last few minutes of the match to take the pool money, much to the dismay of the experts.

Maggie Hart grabbed second spot with a nice carp of 10lb 1oz.

The presentation took place back at Stamshaw Lake AC clubhouse, where the bar staff laid on curry and rice as a big thank you for braving the atrocious weather.

In conjunction with East Hampshire District Council, MBK Leisures held a teaching day last Thursday.

The event, hosted at the Pump Station, Greatham, was part of theGetactiv8d summer programme.

The 30 children who attended the session had either never fished before or had very little experience of angling.

Ken and Kendra – the owners of MBK fisheries – kindly supplied all the tackle, bait and tuition for the day.

The children who came along to fish were aged between eight and 16 years old and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

They caught lots of fish ranging in sizes and species including roach, rudd, perch, skimmers and carp.
