Perfect 10 for Paul in final round
The 78 entrants in the latest round of Southern Premier League made the most of the perfect conditions at Eastney last week.
They landed 479 fish, including bass, dab, flounder, pout, rockling, whiting, sole and an eel, along with 201 top-ups – undersized fish granted 1oz and returned to the sea.
Paul Stevens, pegged on St George's Road, won the match with 10 fish for a weight of 4lb 4oz, which included a bass of 2lb 9oz – the heaviest fish of the night.
Dave Padmore was runner-up with 4lb 2oz from B section, and Mike Perfect was third with 3lb 1oz from A section.
The final podium place went to Rob Marshall who weighed in with 2lb 11oz from D section.
Steve Carter landed the best fish of the night – a sole weighing 1lb 4oz – while Paul Titt had a 13oz pout and Jim Baldwin had a 13oz whiting.
A total of 168 anglers fishedin the 12-round championship, averaging 80 a match – the highest average in the 12-year history of the league.
This isa members-only competition and top of the table for 2009 was Darren Newlands from Newport on the Isle of Wight.
Darren finished on 37 points with a total weight of 45lb 3oz 12dm, collecting a total of 940 along the way.
Runner-up in the league was John Brown from Southampton with a total weight of 42lb 13oz 8dm (19.433kg) and 42 points.
Third place went to Rob Marshall from Taunton who finished on 43 points and 57lb 11oz.

Meanwhile, Mark Caisley landed four pout, seven whiting and a rockling for a weight of 2.7kg to win the latest Gosport & District AC Beach Championship round at Browndown beach.
The win earned him 105 points towards the club championship.
Clive Jones was runner-up with four pout and three whiting for a weight of 2kg and 79 points, while Ian Gay also landed four pout and three whiting for 1.52kg and 61 points.
Although there were no monsters caught, Jones had the heaviest fish of the night – a 440g pout.
There were plenty of small fish to keep the rod tips nodding, although they can be a nuisance if they keep robbing the bait.

Steve Carter is organising a Christmas beach open on Browndown beach on Monday, December 28.
Fishing will be from 6.30pm till 11pm, with drawing from 5pm in Browndown car park.
The entry is 10 all in and it's a pre-book only match.
