Young novices prove natural anglers

On the coarse angling scene, the last of the summer holiday fishing events for East Hampshire District Councils Getactiv8d program was held at MBK Leisures Pump Station ponds at Greatham.

A total of 30 children attended this event with many of the youngsters having either never fished before or with very little experience in angling.

With all of the tackle and bait along with expert tuition supplied by the staff and owners of MBK, the boys and girls aged between eight and 16 years old were kept busy for most of the day.

They landed plenty of fish, including roach, rudd, perch, bream and some fine specimen carp from this beautiful venue near Petersfield.

Hopefully, all the children that attended are now hooked and will want to have a fun day out fishing in the countryside while they are still on their summer break.

In sea angling action this week, the first match in the Rovers Tackle open competition series got under way.

The venue was Clarence Wall in Southsea and this part of the sea front starts to come to life at this time of year, with all manner of species on offer.

Some big bass make a visit from time to time, taking large mackerel baits fished in close after dark.

These matches are fished on a catch-and-release system with the winner catching the longest length of fish on the night.

There is also prize money for the longest single fish, so it pays at times to have a go for the big one.

A field of 19 turned out with one or two England stars in amongst the entrants for a chance to land some specimens on the night.

The overall winner with a length of 183cm was England international Darren Phillips from Fareham who landed pout, bream, small bass and a 58cm smooth-hound to also take the second longest fish pool money.

Second place went to Fareham angler Dave Ware with 61cm total length.

Ware only landed one fish for his match total and this single smooth-hound also won him the pool money for the longest fish of the match.

Third spot went to Dave Edwards also from Fareham with a mixed bag of fish for a length of 49cm.
