Ablett upbeat ahead of BMW assault
James Ablett looked forward to a crunch fortnight and decl-ared: I'm confident.
The Lee-on-the-Solent professional and Southern Region order of merit champion will play in the European Tour's flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, starting next Thursday at Wentworth.
He will then continue his battle against some of the world's best at the European Open at the London Golf Club, Kent.
After a few trips to America, Ablett has been back preparing hard, getting some tournament rounds under his belt ready for his first appearance at the BMW.
He said: 'My ball-flight control is back.
'I've got total control like I want it to be. I've hit a lot of fairways.
'I've got five or six tournament rounds in a week so it's nice to get a little bit of match sharpness.
'It's a great opportunity with them back to back.
'If I hit a purple patch I could win some serious money.'
Ablett will come up against the world's best, with Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy all at Wentworth.
But, according to Ablett, that won't alter his focus.
He said: 'I don't think it's going to be a massive deal to me, to be honest.
'From an early age I've had Steve Richardson playing at my club.
'He's a good friend so I've been picking his brains a bit recently.
'When you are speaking to these sorts of guys it's not such a big deal to me.
'It's a fantastic luxury and it does take a little bit of the aura out of it.
'I'm also friendly with Justin (Rose). I've emailed him and left a message on his wife's facebook!
'He can't avoid me – I look forward to taking 10 quid off him on the putting green.
'But I am there to do a job.
'I know I am capable of going under par on any golf course so I know if I play to the level I can I'll be all right.
'I am targeting three-under like I always do and if someone beats me, they beat me.
'It's tough for us PGA guys, a lot of the pros there are going to be match sharp.
'If some of us do make the cut then we have to go another two days – these guys do that every week.
'I just feel confident about my game. If I feel confident about my game that means I can just play the golf and not think about anything else.'
