Hutsby so close to US Open dream
SAM HUTSBY came agonisingly close to spectacularly qualifying for this year's US Open.
The 20-year-old, from Lee-on-the-Solent, carded a three-under 69 in his morning round at the International Qualifying event at Walton Heath, Surrey.
It left the Walker Cup squad player in prime position to make his major debut and claim one of the 11 spots on offer at Bethpage State Park's Black Course, New York.
However, Hutsby four-putted the 15th in the afternoon to slip out of contention and miss out by four shots.
The performance did, though, once again suggest the England international is more than equipped to make his mark when, as planned, he turns pro after the Walker Cup in September.
Jose-Manuel Lara, Johan Edfors, Jean-Francois Lucquin, Francesco Molinari, Raphael Jacquelin, Simon Khan, Simon Dyson. Thomas Levet, David McLardy, David Horsey and Peter Hanson secured their places at the US Open which starts on June 18.
Ryder Cup players Paul McGinley, David Howell and Niclas Fasth missed out.
