Mixed bag for Ablett at Wentworth
JAMES ABLETT carded a first-round three-over par at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
The Lee-on-the-Solent pro was level par at the turn, but five bogeys on the back nine – including four in five holes - saw him finish on 75.
It now leaves him probably needing to claw back at least two shots to be in with a chance of making the cut.
Despite a couple of three-putts and a double-bogey on the third, Ablett did produce some memorable moments.
A sublime birdie on the eighth drew a huge roar from the crowd, while he saw a chip for eagle on the last lip out in front of the grandstand.
Ablett said: 'I'll stick to the same game plan in the second round and try to get my irons a bit tidier and closer to the hole.
'I'm hitting the ball great and I've left myself needing to get a score that's not beyond my capabilities.'
David Horsey, Anthony Wall and Gonzalo Fdez Castano shared the first-round lead on five under.
Paul Casey is well placed on three under, while young Irish star Rory McIlroy is level par.
Lee Westwood had a day to forget, he could manage a round of only five over.
