Wentworth disappointment for Ablett

JAMES ABLETT'S debut on the European Tour ended in disappointment yesterday after he failed to make the cut at Wentworth.

The 31-year-old Lee-on-the-Solent pro knew he needed to go under par after a three-over first round at the BMW PGA Championship.

But another round of 75 saw him finish six over, four shots off the cut mark.

Once again the par-four third and the par-three 10th proved his undoing, dropping shots on both as he had done on Thursday.

An eagle on the par-five 12th got him back to three over overall and raised hopes of a grandstand finish.

But Ablett, who qualified for the event after winning the Southern Region order of merit and still has the forthcoming European Open to look forward to, fell away on the closing holes to leave him a frustrated man.

He said: 'I hit the ball so much better today but I just couldn't buy a putt at the times you needed to get it going.

'I had three or four that were just on the wrong side of the hole from about seven feet and you are going to stuggle then.

'I hit a booming drive on the 12th, and hit my second shot with a three wood perfect out of a divot. I shot it to 12 feet which I've rolled in.

'Next hole I'm on the wrong side of the hole again and hit it a fraction short because you are so scared of it going away from you.

'Overall, I've holed very little from inside 10 feet today and given myself an awful lot of chances.

'I said on Thursday I had to get my irons closer and I did that, but given the opportunities my strike rate wasn't there from that range.

'I hit some really good golf shots out there today but I just couldn't finish them off.

'And if you don't finish it off in this game you're screwed.

'If I'd had the strike rate from inside seven feet that I had Thursday, even without the eagle, by 12 I would have been level par.

'It was just putts that cost me – too many times I was on the wrong side of the hole. It's so vital.'
