Karen Miles has tipped her GKM side to make their mark in the premier division of the Portsmouth League.
After a tremendous season in division one, the skipper is looking forward to tackling the city’s best teams.
And she reckons GKM could make a home for themselves in the top flight.
Miles said: ‘We have worked hard for promotion.
‘It is purely down to the commitment and effort of all the players.
‘I’ve had a consistent seven or eight players and, luckily, I have a versatile team as well.
‘I have some great subs, who have very often stepped in only an hour or so before a match.
‘Now we are very much looking forward to the challenge of the premier division.
‘Hopefully, we will hold our own and be able to stay up there.
‘If not, we’ll just go out every week and try our very best to get some pleasing results.’
Last season GKM welcomed Lou van den Braak and Sarah Sillman from maternity leave.
Nikki Oliver is also expected to be fit for the new season after injury and will hope to forge a dangerous shooting partnership with Sillman.
They would not have the chance to play in the top flight this term had it not been for the likes of Chris Allen and Julie Fehr.
Miles praised the duo for stepping in to shoot for the side at the drop of a hat.
‘Both players fit in the team easily and always give 100-per-cent,’ she said.
Defender Lisa Henderson is one of team’s longest-serving players.
She reads the game superbly, while is also really supportive to other team members.
Clare Woodcock’s departure is the only blow to GKM.
She was fantastic at goal-keeper last term but has left the club.
However, Miles reckons she has a ready-made replacement to fill the void.
Miles said: ‘Stepping into her shoes will be one of my cherished subs, Bryony Smith.
‘Bryony has been outstanding and works her socks off in every match she plays.’
Versatile Karen Andrews and attacker Jo Kingsbury add further options.
While Miles is even hoping to see Jo Smith on the court again soon.
The skipper said: ‘Jo Smith has been out due to other commitments but we hope to see her back in the squad soon.’
Meanwhile, Miles has not forgotten the dedication of the likes of Lisa Price and Cathie Stevenson.
‘Without these players, their hard work and dedication – I wouldn’t have a team,’ admitted the GKM captain.
‘They are all good friends of mine – both on and off the court – and I couldn’t ask for any more from them.
‘Let’s hope we have a good season in the premier division.’
