PEEKS seal Navy glory

PEEKS triumphed over the brave SAS1 to win the Royal Navy's open netball competition at Bransbury Park on Saturday.

The Royal Navy Netball Association (RNNA) organised and ran the tournament, sponsored by BVT and supported in the main by members of Navy Blues.

The event was run on Armed Forces Day to raise funds for the Help For Heroes charity, The RN/RM Charitable Trust and for the RNNA.

And it proved to be a real belter, attracting 14 teams from as far as Basingstoke and Christchurch.

The teams were drawn into two qualifying leagues before the top-three teams from each competed in the cup competition, while the remainder

battled for the plate.

The winners of the two leagues were both unbeaten and both from Portsmouth – SAS1 and Toronto.

The semi-finalists were Peeks, Rae Palmer/Angels, Toronto and SAS1, with local side Shooting Stars losing out in the cup games to the latter two.

Peeks easily overcame Rae Palmer/Angels in their semi-final but the other semi was a tight affair.

SAS1 and Toronto could not be separated at the whistle, but the former managed to net the decisive goal in extra-time.

The final between Peeks and SAS1 was decided on the quality of shooting.

SAS1 squandered their chances, while the Peeks attack refused to miss.

Victorious by a dozen goals, Peeks were crowned champions, but SAS1 can take great credit after beating them earlier in the day.

The plate competition was won by 121, with Havant Hawks coming very creditable runners-up.

The youngsters proved throughout the day they are developing into a very competent group of netballers.

The tournament raised 1,200 for the nominated charities, with the raffle and BBQ profits being supplemented by donations from Alexandra Sports and the local ice cream man, who benefited from a sunny day and great support from all those teams who had entered.

Emma Searle, Katherine Rackham, Sasha Hall, Anna Misiak, Kim Mehta and Kate Scott from Navy Blues who ran the HQ and BBQ deserve great credit, as do Arty Shaw and Helen Mann who umpired throughout.
