Gosport & Fareham consolidated their grip on top spot with a 36-19 win at London Cornish in London two south west.

Mark Wells’ side overcame an early onslaught to take command, though the contest was closer than the score suggested.

With a 10-point lead at the top, Gosport & Fareham are strong promotion favourites.

‘London Cornish came at us in the early stages but once we gained a bit of possession we looked dangerous,’ said Wells.

‘To be fair, the scoreline didn’t reflect how tight the game was.

‘It was just that we took our chances and they didn’t.

‘I have to pay tribute to the lads who came in because they made a massive difference.

‘There were a number of outstanding performances including those from Sam Foster, Simon Pickett and Matt Flower.

‘To score five tries and win by 17 points at this venue is a good achievement.’

Gosport & Fareham were rocked back early on as the home side established an eight-point lead with a try and a penalty.

The visitors hit back before the break with tries from scrum-half Wes Dugan and full-back Andy Vance, with Alex Duncombe adding a conversion.

Duncombe also kicked a good penalty from the Cornish 10-metre line.

Leading 15-11 at the break, Well’s side took charge at the start of the second period.

Centre Foster jinked his way over and three minutes later winger Ryan Thorne crossed for another try, with Duncombe converting both.

Though the hosts hit back with a penalty and a try, Wes Dugan grabbed his second score of the game at the death to seal the victory.
