Bonney’s right on cue

Emma Bonney claimed her first women’s snooker title for more than three years with a cue bought on the internet two days previously.
The Cosham potter defeated Hong Kong’s world No3 Jaique Ip Wan In in an absorbing final to secure the Southern Women’s Classic title at Fareham Snooker Club.
And her victory was made even more special by the fact that she only had five hours practice with her new cue.
The 35-year-old admitted she felt automatically comfortable with her new purchase – and now hoped to use it to secure world championship glory.
‘I really liked it straight away,’ said Bonney, who accounted for two more of the four Hong Kong entries en-route to the final.
‘Hopefully, I’ll win the next tournament (in Swindon) and the World Championship with my new cue.
‘I played some really good safety shots during the tournament, which was the telling thing against the Hong Kong girls.
‘I was keeping them pretty tight to the bottom cushion when I could and it did make quite a difference.’
Bonney admitted she was slightly envious of the Hong Kong quartet – including IBSF women’s world champion Ng On Yee, who she defeated in the semi-final. They all have professional status, and Bonney has tipped them to dominate the sport in the future.
‘They’re very dedicated,’ she said. ‘They have a full-time coach and they play full time.
‘They will be the ones to beat in the future. They’ll always be strong competition.
‘Against Ng On Yee, she started off really well in the first frame.
‘I rattled one ball and that was my only shot in the frame.’
Bonney’s previous WLBSA ranking wins came in the South Coast Classic and British Open in 2008.
Ip Wan In produced the shock of the day, knocking out world number one Maria Catalano 3-0 in the last 16.
Jenny Poulter defeated Gaye Jones 2-0 to collect her third senior’s trophy of the season.
Hampshire’s Suzie Opacic prevailed 2-0 against So Man Yan to pick up her second plate trophy since returning to the circuit.
